A different light

Songs seem to come to me ‘just like that’.  5 of the songs were basically written and completed in 9 mths during a most creative period in 2016/17. The others were written 5 even 10 yrs before that. The important thing here is together they create a kind of story line” – Chris Barlow

If Chris Barlow had slipped into the studio, either while recording Dire Straits’ earliest records, or Tom Petty’s albums, or Dylan’s seventies stuff, he would hardly have been thrown out of there.”

Who is

Chris Barlow

Chris is an experienced and competent songwriter with a voice full of character and expression. Born and bred in Birmingham (UK), he’s ‘done the rounds’ in England (mainly the Midlands), the north and west of France and here in Norway. (Not to mention a few other places along the way).

Barlow crossed the North Sea to make Sortland, Norway his new home in 1987 and soon got involved in the local music scene.

Discography

Chris Barlow built up a solid catalogue of songs over the years and has two albums and a couple of singles to his name on the north Norwegian label NNP. And now, a third album on the label Blue PaTron.

2021

A different light

We finally got it released in Nov/Dec 2021.  I’d been working on the concept for some time, many hurdles to get over but we got there in the end.

A Different Light is an album of songs.  Hopefully there’ll be favourite tracks but there’s a thread running through it, there’s a story being told.  Or is it a story, maybe it’s a picture.

So settle yourself down, listen to the whole thing and find out where you end up.

Released by Blue PaTron, a new label with bassist Trond Hansen at the helm.  Run by artists for artists, we wish him all the success with his project.

And you're gone) (single)

A single download released in November 2021 as promotion for the album ‘A Different Light’. A great track with Remi Kristiansen shining on acoustic guitar.

2018

Hold on (Don't let it fall) (single)

The 2nd single produced and arranged by Maartin Allcock. Released digitally in 2018, this is my first version of the song. The latest one is featured on the new album ‘A Different Light’.

Shade of Blue - Chris Barlow v3
2003/2016

Shade of blue - feat. England Brooks (single)

First recorded and released by Nord-Norsk Plateselskap in 2003

This time with Rasmus Johansen on bass.  3 tracks that came together really well.

It was 5 in the morning and the final session when I finished off the vocals.  A little help also from Sverri Dahl, Svein-Arild Berntsen, May Rita Vildgren and studio man Tore who added some acoustic guitar.

Shade of Blue – feat. England Brooks

The wonderful England Brooks on vocal, this download was released in 2016

Maartin Allcock produced and arranged the whole thing.  He brought in top guitarist Andy Mackenzie and the jazzy/blue feel on the record gives the song an extra lift.

2012

Under Northern lights

I’m very pleased with this album from 2012.

Trond Hansen on bass and Geir Morfjord on drums, as they have been on all the recordings,  plus 15  musicians from round hereabouts who I’d worked with in one collaboration or another.  Not all on the same tracks of course but everything came together wonderfully with the help of Cato Steffensen who worked on the final mix.

Marith Endresen had 2 tracks with her band The Mean Men and I had a few acoustic things at the end with Trond on bass.

It was well worth the time and effort to get his done and it’s still available on all the usual download channels, as is all my stuff.  There’s even a few CDs left for anyone who’s interested in ‘having and holding’.   I certainly am.  Order now!

1996

One of us

Released in 1996, we still had the same nucleus from the first band I was with (Cropper John).

Roy Stenersen had moved on to Tromsø, so I got in touch with guitarist Oddmar Amundsen who came and joined the ranks.

I think we recorded 15 or 16 songs here in Sortland for a demo in just 2 days and soon got an offer from Nord-Norsk Plateselskap which led to a productive period with Tore Stefanussen
in Senja.

There are some good songs on there which deserve a wider audience than we achieved at the time but, you know, we do what we can.

Makes Me Wonder (Single)

This CD single, from 1994, was my first recording after moving to Norway.  Suddenly way up
in the north, but I soon fell in love with the place and got myself acquainted with the
musicians round and abouts.

Maartin Allcock (Fairport and Jethro Tull amongst others) came over to help us out with this one.

I’d first met Maartin in the early 80’s in Oslo. (The Scotsman). He produced the sessions in the studio but schedules meant he had to get back to the UK before we had any chance of getting into the mixing.  Anyway, we got it done  (Thank you Ove Schei) but I’m not too sure if it was finally mastered or not. Not a bad piece of work
though.
